The Cost Of Being A Bridesmaid

What does it mean to be a bridesmaid? For me, choosing my bridesmaids came down to those that have been there for me, supported and loved me and my fiance, and will continue to do so for the rest of our lives. They are my friends that would be by my side in an instant, and keep me sane and grounded.

While being asked to stand by the bride's side is a huge honor, the cost of being a bridesmaid has skyrocketed in recent years. It's a concern so many girls have, so I have broken down the common costs involved with being a bridesmaid just to give you an idea.

1. The Dress

It is the bride's choice on what you will wear, and the bridesmaid dresses that are currently trending can range from $100- $400. Take into consideration alterations, if you will need to order extra length, and also the possibility of purchasing new shoes. If you have a tight budget, consider helping your bride with the research and send her some options that are in the lower price range.

2. Hair, Makeup, & Nails

These are cost that can really add up just before the wedding. You could easily spend $200 by doing all of these services. Your bride may request that all maids wear their hair up, or a certain color nail polish be used. If you don't want to shuck out the money for these, politely let her know that you are happy to follow her requests but that you can do them yourself.

3. Travel Costs

Paying for a hotel for a night or two can add up, but because you're IN the wedding, you may be required to arrive in town even earlier. If you're flying from out of state you may need to consider a rental car as well. You're looking at spending at least $600 for all of this. Remember to consider travel costs for all the parties BEFORE the wedding...engagement party, bridal shower, bachelorette....remember that if your budget is tight it's okay to say no to some of these things.

4 Gifts

You'll likely spend at least $200 on gifts for your bride. From an engagement gift, to a shower gift, to lingerie at the bachelorette party, and a wedding gift, the prices add up quickly.

5. The Bachelorette Party

Bachelorette parties have blown up so much in recent years. They are no longer just a one night thing, but rather a short vacation over a long weekend. Vegas, Nashville, and Charleston have all become popular destinations for bachelorette groups. You're not only looking at flight costs or gas, but you'll have to pay for your hotel, multiple brunches and dinners out, drinks (for the bride too!), Uber fares, and possibly matching T-shirts. This fun weekend will definitely be a huge chuck of your bridesmaid budget. If you or another maid have a family beach or mountain house, consider offering it as an option to the bride to help everyone out with cost. Remember that its not where you are but who you're with that really matters.

If you've had the privilege of being asked to be a bridesmaid, consider these things:

1. Be honest with your bride.

Let her know up front how honored your are, but that you are on a tight budget. She asked you to be in her wedding because she values your relationship, not how much money you make. Ask if she can work with you to help keep your costs down.

2. Help out with research.

Don't just complain about how expensive things are. Odds are you aren't the only bridesmaid on a budget so offer some creative ideas on where to cut costs, or less expensive alternatives.

3. It's okay to say no.

It's just a fact, being a bridesmaid is expensive. If it's not possible even after certain cost-cutting options, its okay to politely let your bride know you are unable to do it. Let her know that you will definitely be in attendance as a guest, and that you hope she understands. Keep in mind that if you do say yes to being a bridesmaid, you don't have to say yes to every event!

In conclusion, try to remember the true meaning behind being a bridesmaid, and not let the cost aspect overwhelm you! Next week on the blog I'll be sharing five creative ways to ask a bridesmaid to be in your wedding! Have a wonderful week ya'll!! xoxo
